Jim Davidson survived one of the deadliest days on Mt。 Everest on April 25, 2015。 A 7。8 magnitude earthquake hit while he was climbing Mt。 Everest with his team。 After his experience, he didn't think he'd ever build up the strength to go back。 He finally returned in 2017 to face Mt。 Everest once again。I loved Into Thin Air, so I was really excited when I found out this book was coming out。 We get to hear details not only about Jim Davidson's life, but the earthquake as well which was really inte Jim Davidson survived one of the deadliest days on Mt。 Everest on April 25, 2015。 A 7。8 magnitude earthquake hit while he was climbing Mt。 Everest with his team。 After his experience, he didn't think he'd ever build up the strength to go back。 He finally returned in 2017 to face Mt。 Everest once again。I loved Into Thin Air, so I was really excited when I found out this book was coming out。 We get to hear details not only about Jim Davidson's life, but the earthquake as well which was really interesting to learn about。 He also dives into the intense training he had to go through before climbing Mt。 Everest and what he did differently in terms of training the second time around。I really enjoyed Jim Davidson's writing and his ability to tell his story by weaving in history and science。 He worked as an environmental geologist for 20 years so he knows what he's talking about, and it's easy to understand even if you're not well versed in science。If you liked Into Thin Air or if you're a fan of memoirs, you'll love this one! I also highly recommend checking out the audiobook, it's easy to listen to and will definitely suck you in! This book totally surpassed my expectations, and I can't wait to see what Jim Davidson comes out with next。Thank you to St。 Martin's Press for sending me an arc! 。。。more

Good bookI follow the Everest seasons religiously thanks to the great reporting of Alan Arnette。 When he recommended this book I knew it would be next on my reading list。 I was not disappointed。 Jim Davidson has a writing style such that you can see the beauty of Everest through his descriptions。 Having to cut his first summit attempt short due to the devastating earthquake in Nepal, he was honest about the struggles with deciding whether to attempt it a second time。 I really enjoyed the book an Good bookI follow the Everest seasons religiously thanks to the great reporting of Alan Arnette。 When he recommended this book I knew it would be next on my reading list。 I was not disappointed。 Jim Davidson has a writing style such that you can see the beauty of Everest through his descriptions。 Having to cut his first summit attempt short due to the devastating earthquake in Nepal, he was honest about the struggles with deciding whether to attempt it a second time。 I really enjoyed the book and highly recommend it。 。。。more

The Next Everest, Jim Davidson。It’s helpful to remember that in order to write an autobiography the author must have survived the story in order to tell the tale。 But even secure in this logic, there were still times when I found myself wondering if Jim Davidson would survive。 (Spoiler: he lives!)The Next Everest isn’t just another climbing journal (it was cold, it was hard, I made it, good for me), but a telling of the lifelong preparation, unique mindset and solid support system needed to embr The Next Everest, Jim Davidson。It’s helpful to remember that in order to write an autobiography the author must have survived the story in order to tell the tale。 But even secure in this logic, there were still times when I found myself wondering if Jim Davidson would survive。 (Spoiler: he lives!)The Next Everest isn’t just another climbing journal (it was cold, it was hard, I made it, good for me), but a telling of the lifelong preparation, unique mindset and solid support system needed to embrace and thrive through that which is beyond human limitation。 Jim Davidson is a highly experienced mountaineer who lives to climb。 His drive, self-discipline and focus, as well his being an environmentalist and humanitarian all come across beautifully, yet simply, in this compelling story。Jim credits early lessons learned while working as a painter for his father as fundamental to his success as a climber and in life。 A tragedy early in his climbing career fuels his passion to be the best he can be。 Various climbing and work stories are interwoven into his recounting of The Next Everest。Speaking of Everest。。。 wow! Reading the book is the next best thing to actually summiting (minus the near death experiences!) The reader is taken into the midst of the deadly 2015 earthquake which put an end to Jim’s first attempt to summit。 We return with much detail in 2017 for a second helping of Everest in all its glory。 Practical issues are discussed (you don’t want to miss learning about pooping at 20,000 feet), logistics of acclimating and oxygen use are covered, weather and extreme climbing conditions are vividly described, and all the while great respect is afforded to the Nepali people and their customs。 The Next Everest is a thorough and gripping read。This is my first time reading an “Advance Reader Copy”, uncorrected proof。 When reading first publications of newly released books I generally find several errors that managed to slip past final proofing; this always provides a “Eureka! found another one!” moment。 Reading this uncorrected proof afforded perhaps a hundred such moments, and gave me pause to appreciate the amount of first, broad stroke, and then, fine tooth scrutiny that goes into publishing。 I look forward to seeing the final polished version of the book which promises to include 16 pages of colour photographs。Om mani padme hum, Om mani padme hum, Om mani padme hum。Thank you Goodreads for the great Giveaway! 。。。more

A well written book, it's an interesting read that shows how much the rich entitled climbers rely on their sherpa guides to get them up the mountain。 The author and other climbers in his "expedition" have their tents, food and oxygen spread out all over the mountain in camps that the sherpas have risked their lives to set up。 If you want to climb a mountain, you should do the work。I won this from a Goodreads giveaway。 A well written book, it's an interesting read that shows how much the rich entitled climbers rely on their sherpa guides to get them up the mountain。 The author and other climbers in his "expedition" have their tents, food and oxygen spread out all over the mountain in camps that the sherpas have risked their lives to set up。 If you want to climb a mountain, you should do the work。I won this from a Goodreads giveaway。 。。。more

I listened to this as an audiobook。 I don’t listen to audiobooks frequently because my mind tends to wander, but The Next Everest was engaging and easy to follow。 In fact, I would recommend this format for this and perhaps other adventure stories。 It was easy to feel like you had strapped on crampons and were climbing into the death zone clipped into the fixed ropes just behind him。For a decades-long armchair mountain climber, that effect was only enhanced by his mentions of friend and fellow cl I listened to this as an audiobook。 I don’t listen to audiobooks frequently because my mind tends to wander, but The Next Everest was engaging and easy to follow。 In fact, I would recommend this format for this and perhaps other adventure stories。 It was easy to feel like you had strapped on crampons and were climbing into the death zone clipped into the fixed ropes just behind him。For a decades-long armchair mountain climber, that effect was only enhanced by his mentions of friend and fellow climber, Alan Arnette who blog and social media I have followed for many years, and Russell Brice, mountaineer and expedition leader whose Everest series I enjoyed on The Discovery Channel。The author was a lifelong climber who had not yet added Everest to his summit list。 He was turned back in his 2015 attempt when a 7。8 magnitude earthquake left him stranded high on the mountain。 The earthquake and the ensuing aftershocks killed nearly 9,000 people in Nepal, eighteen of them on Everest。 Davidson and his team were eventually rescued by helicopter。 He didn’t think he’d get another summit attempt but was able to return in 2017。 I recommend the book for fans of adventure, mountaineering, or just good storytelling。I received this Advanced Reader Copy of The Next Everest from NetGalley in exchange for an honest reviewI recommend the book for fans of adventure, mountaineering, or just good storytelling。 。。。more

The tagline "Surviving the Mountain's Deadliest Day" is technically true; Davidson was on Everest on the highest-fatality day in Everest's history。 But the avalanche missed him and his team entirely。 It seems a bit disingenuous to claim a tragedy that you were only peripheral to。 A solid half of his account of the trip seems to be dedicated to the media calls he fielded, the candy bars he ate, and the backstories of other random climbers he encountered。 It's not a terrible book。 Since this is Mo The tagline "Surviving the Mountain's Deadliest Day" is technically true; Davidson was on Everest on the highest-fatality day in Everest's history。 But the avalanche missed him and his team entirely。 It seems a bit disingenuous to claim a tragedy that you were only peripheral to。 A solid half of his account of the trip seems to be dedicated to the media calls he fielded, the candy bars he ate, and the backstories of other random climbers he encountered。 It's not a terrible book。 Since this is Mount Everest we're talking about, even a "boring" day on the slopes is somewhat interesting。 There were definitely lots of neat Everest factoids scattered throughout。 But The Next Everest's potential gets bogged down by aimless details, flat attempts at emotion, and awkward privilege。(I received this book for free through a Goodreads giveaway。) 。。。more

Jim Davidson's new book, "The Next Everest" is an inspiring read。 He has a conversational way of writing that glides a reader on page after page。 His story is a compelling page-turner。 I cheered when he achieved his dream after so many challenges and losses。 What inspired me the most was his perspective about perseverance, resilience and post-traumatic growth: "This gradual process of post-traumatic growth cannot remedy past tragedies or restore life to the way it 'used to be。' But, post-traumat Jim Davidson's new book, "The Next Everest" is an inspiring read。 He has a conversational way of writing that glides a reader on page after page。 His story is a compelling page-turner。 I cheered when he achieved his dream after so many challenges and losses。 What inspired me the most was his perspective about perseverance, resilience and post-traumatic growth: "This gradual process of post-traumatic growth cannot remedy past tragedies or restore life to the way it 'used to be。' But, post-traumatic growth does make us more resilient for the changes, challenges, and uncertainties that we will surely encounter on the next Everest。" His perspective reminds me of Dr。 Viktor Frankl, who wrote "Man's Search for Meaning" and Dr。 Jerry Sittser, who wrote "A Grace Disguised: How the Soul Grows Through Loss。" Both would be excellent books to read along with Jim's books。 Also strongly recommend Jim's first book, The Ledge: An Inspirational Story of Friendship and Survival。" 。。。more

Loved this action- filled book! Was a quick and interesting read。 My only complaint was the time hopping in the book。 Sometimes a time change we be notated in the chapter but the following chapter would not be noted for the time period it returned to。 This happened frequently, generally I figured it out but a better notation system would have been preferred

If you, like me, are a big fan of Into Thin Air: A Personal Account of the Mount Everest Disaster, you'll know that books about mountaineering - especially about exciting events on the world's biggest mountain(s) - are hard to come by。 Really, not that many people climb Everest, K2, and the other giants that often, and even fewer write books about it。 So a heartfelt thank you to Jim Davidson, for giving me the first new and actually well-written book about Everest that I've seen in a few years。 If you, like me, are a big fan of Into Thin Air: A Personal Account of the Mount Everest Disaster, you'll know that books about mountaineering - especially about exciting events on the world's biggest mountain(s) - are hard to come by。 Really, not that many people climb Everest, K2, and the other giants that often, and even fewer write books about it。 So a heartfelt thank you to Jim Davidson, for giving me the first new and actually well-written book about Everest that I've seen in a few years。 Davidson's account is unique: he was on the mountain with IMG expeditions in 2015, resting in his tent at Camp One, when a 7。8 magnitude earthquake struck。 Jim and dozens of other climbers were stuck at Camps One and Two, with many dozens more at basecamp。 The final death toll from the earthquake was 19, most people buried under ice and snow in the notorious Khumbu Icefall。 Of course, at the end of this whole ordeal, no one was going to summit the mountain in such uncertain conditions that year。 It became the first year in nearly four decades where not a single person reached the top of Everest。 Davidson returned back to his home in Colorado, disappointed but happy to be alive。 After many months of soul-searching, he decided that he wanted to give Everest another try - it's been his lifelong dream to summit, and he was determined to achieve it。 He details his intensive training regimen, from sprinting up fourteeners to doing lap after lap of uphill running to simulate Everest pushing his body to the limit。 In 2017, Davidson returned to Everest for the second time, overcoming his fears of reliving that earthquake。 The book details both the 2015 and 2017 trips, the aftermath of the earthquake, the time in between spent training, and every detail of the ascent back up Everest。 Davidson is quite a good writer, and despite this book coming in at around 400 pages, it remains captivating basically the whole way through。 If you're ever interested in a true play-by-play of what it takes to get up Everest - all the rotations, acclimatization hikes, food, the toll it takes on your body, even how waste is disposed of on the mountain - this is a great book。 You can't compare it to Into Thin Air or No Way Down: Life and Death on K2 as it's not really a disaster book - but it's nonetheless an interesting journey in a fascinating place - I'll read just about any book about Everest, and although this one was more middle of the road, it was still quite enjoyable。 Thank you to the publisher for the ARC via Netgalley! 。。。more

Mountain narrative: five starsPainting sections: three stars。 I get why they're there, but one of them made the point。 One of the things I really appreciated about this book was the detail about the techniques of climbing。 I've read a number of Everest books at this point, and this was one that actually gave enough detail about the techniques involved and enough sweaty, stinky detail to drive the point home about what it's like to be camping and climbing at high altitudes。 Mountain narrative: five starsPainting sections: three stars。 I get why they're there, but one of them made the point。 One of the things I really appreciated about this book was the detail about the techniques of climbing。 I've read a number of Everest books at this point, and this was one that actually gave enough detail about the techniques involved and enough sweaty, stinky detail to drive the point home about what it's like to be camping and climbing at high altitudes。 。。。more

The Next Everest by Jim DavidsonIs there something you wanted to know about climbing Mt Everest? Your questions will be answered here。 After a harrowing experience mid-trip, an unexpected 7。8 earthquake sent this author and many more back to the drawing board for a second attempt at scaling the highest peak in the world。 You’ll have a front row seat to every step and arm reach at certain points of his climb。 One mistake can mean death, as bodies left behind will attest。 It’s not all climbing。 Th The Next Everest by Jim DavidsonIs there something you wanted to know about climbing Mt Everest? The Next Everest becomes a metaphor for anything difficult you might want to try, and Davidson encourages us all to keep open to the next Everest in our lives。 #StMartinsPress#NetGalley 。。。more
